Tonight we put together our "Spatial Intervention" project. We picked rooms, partners, and materials from a cup and then had to make an installation that reversed some function of our room. This is what we came up with.

Our materials were canvas, orange string, and plastic netting. Our goal was to create a sort of "brainstorm" idea in the conference room. We strung orange string through holes in the chairs, up through the ceiling tiles, and into a mass of plastic netting that we suspended above the conference table. Then we made "thought-bubble" knots of canvas on the strings and within the "storm". All the chairs are connected, ergo, all the user's thoughts are connected toward a common goal during a brainstorm. The way the strings attach to the chairs prevent people sitting in them from leaning back and relaxing, keeping them focused on the brainstorm.

The whole mess was put between a projector and a screen. When the lights are turned off and the projector is turned on, we get an interesting look, both on the screen and the wire mesh itself.

When people came in and explored the room, their comments reinforced our idea. They felt restricted when sitting in the chairs, but also felt like it was restriction towards a common goal, a brainstorm. This was definitely a new approach to an ordinary room.
